Vi har brug for søvnen. Vi længes mod den. Derfor vil vi i Kulturo #47 tale om søvn for at optrevle de savlstrenge der endnu hænger ved puden: Hvad er det med denne snorkboble, vi sådan trænger til og længes efter? Hvad siger søvnen om mennesket og dets livsvilkår? Og hvilken rolle spiller søvnen i hverdagen?
Vi siger, at hun ikke er kommet sovende til noget, eller at han har sovet i timen, og på særligt dårlige dage har jeg sovet over mig og må bære utidigheden som en tung sky over mig hele dagen. På weekenddagene, arbejderbevægelsens sejr, kan vi få lov til at sove ud, indhente den søvn der undslap os i bekymringen om den næste dag. Og dernæst tilbage til mandagen: Vågne, stirre ud i værelset, gøre morgenens bevægelser og så rejse med cykel, tog, bus, bil for at ankomme på arbejdspladsen, klar til dagens dont.
Ifølge Jacques Ranciére udfordrede 1800-tallets arbejdere i Paris tanken om, at natten for arbejderne var ren rekreation. Det viste sig tværtimod at være et rum for kreativ udfoldelse og tanker, et rum der undslap arbejdets krav om ren arbejdsrettet produktivitet eller reproduktion. I nutidens senkapitalisme er alt gjort mål- og investerbart. Nogen vælger måske at bruge nattetimerne på noget kreativt, at øve sig, forberede sig, eller prioriterer en god nats søvn for at kunne yde optimalt næste morgen.
Investeringen i søvn er en art usynlig produktion: reelt men ulønnet og usynliggjort som arbejde. Man kan strejke fra sit job, men man kan ikke strejke fra omsorgsarbejde og rekreation – blandt andet fordi det ville få konsekvenser for den enkelte og dennes relationer.
Dog kan vi bruge senkapitalismens logik mod den selv: I stedet for at placere det kunstneriske rum uden for den produktive sfære kan vi tælle og måle tiden – og i stedet for at investere disse tal i en uvis fremtid eller fetischere dem som ‘kreativitet’ og ‘selvrealisering’, kræve at de bliver set som reelt arbejde. Cecilie Ullerups artikel præsenterer i tråd hermed idéen om at tælle hele livet som et arbejde, og derfor også søvnen, som en hjælp på vejen mod ligestillingen af alle arbejdsformer, også de reproduktive og affektive.
I en mulig læsning af de tre billeder af HuskMitNavn, som optræder i indeværende udgivelse, kan arbejdet stjæle fra søvnen, især i SLEEPING KIDS, som forestiller en far der cykler med sine to sovende børn. Men måske sker der et lille oprør i maleriet Hotel Maid, da stuepigen stjæler søvnen tilbage ved at blunde på hotelværelset, i en seng der er beregnet til en andens søvn.
Arbejdet kan også stjæle fra søvnen ved at foregå i søvnens timer; natarbejdet, hvor det elektriske lys har overtaget og slummeren må klares i dagtimerne. Det beskrives i den fine arbejdspladsroman Lageret Huset Marie af Jonas Eika, hvori jeget har natarbejde på et lager:
“Da det blev februar, begyndte mit søvnunderskud at gøre mig gennemtrængelig. Det var endnu lyst på Lageret når jeg ankom, stadig lyst udenfor når jeg fik fri. Søvnen varede sjældent mere end fire timer og føltes mest som en forlængelse af den træthed der havde givet mig den.” (Lindhardt og Ringhof, 2015)
Søvnen er i det hele taget et motiv eller et rum, der går igen i litteraturen, men især Marcel Proust har brugt mange linjer på at beskrive den. Derfor optræder han også flere gange i dette blad, både i Rosanna Tindbæks analyse af sovende kvinder i kunsten, Jacob Ulrichs essay om søvnens grænseløshed i Kafka og Prousts forfatterskab samt Neal Ashley Conrad Things encyklopædiske nedslag i På sporet af den tabte tid.
Man kan tænke sig at Morfeus’ arme ikke bare interesserer os, fordi søvnen fylder en tredjedel af vort liv, men også fordi selve søvnens natur er så hemmelighedsfuld. Søvnen sætter en grænse for bevidstheden, som søvnforsker Birgitte Rahbek Kornum således: ”I den raske hjerne hæmmer aktiveringssystemet og søvnkernen hinanden gensidigt, sådan så de ikke kan være aktive samtidigt. Det giver korte og komplette skift mellem vågen tilstand og søvn.” Denne grænse bliver også etableret og udforsket i forestillingen om den Anden; den elskede Johannes i Maja Lindberg Schwaners tekst, tillukkede Albertine for Marcels iagttagelser i På sporet af den tabte tid, lolitaen i belurerens kikkertsigte i romanuddraget fra Onkel Hawaii, og de sovende kvinder for beskuerens blik i Le Sommeil af Gustave Courbet. Søvnen bliver altså et symbol på det fremmede og ukendte i den Anden – og os selv.
Måske af denne grund kommer søvnen til at virke underligt privat og afsondret, men hverdagen banker altid på døren og afbryder denne tilbagetrukne pause: barnet der græder, den snorkende sengefælle, blæren eller sulten, mareridtet – alle trækker de os ud af søvnen. Som Olga Ravn beskriver barnets lyde i Ammedigte:
”hans klynk når mig i mørket
hans klynk går dybt ind i mig som et
speculum af stål” (Kritiker #43, 2017)
Et lignende tema kan man finde i Den som skriker på vallmofröet af Per Olvmyr i indeværende udgivelse, hvor mælkeerstatningen får hele natten til at ryste. Forælderens lod er søvnløshed.
Og det er ikke kun mennesker, der invaderer søvnens rum med krav og lyde, det er også alle de forskellige råd, der skal optimere søvnen: Hvis du ikke har et godt sovehjerte, skal du slukke for de blå skærme, motionere i løbet af dagen, men ikke efter kl. 18, ikke drikke kaffe, ikke drikke alkohol, ikke spise slik, kun bruge sengen til søvn, lægge mobilen langt væk. Du holder søvnen i dine egne hænder. Det er dit ansvar at være rask og frisk. Du skal tage dig sammen. Du er med din søvn med til at få tandhjulene til at dreje rundt, og så er vi tilbage, hvor vi startede: ved søvnens rum som en arbejdsplads, en pligt. Du må lade dig lulle ind, dysse ned, falde i søvn. Samtidig har arbejdsmarkedet udviklet sig med tilsynekomsten af entreprenøren, selvrealiseringen og retten til et meningsfuldt job: Jonas Eikas lager eksisterer side om side med New Public Management, nedskæringer og evalueringer, mens den (relativt) nye teknologi medfører arbejdstelefoner, der ringer om aftenen og modtager lysende mails i soveværelsets mørke.
